Douglas Charles Adkins passed away on December 31, 2017 at his apartment in Riverside at the age of 85. He was born October 18, 1932 in San Bernardino, CA, the firstborn child of Ray Gus Adkins and Ethel Grace Adkins.
Doug's family moved to Lompoc, California when he was a teenager. He attended Lompoc High, where he was a star player on the varsity football team in 1950. At his 45th high school reunion, he was named to the Alumni Association's Sports and Achievement Hall of Fame.
Doug proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, he began his career as a firefighter in 1956. First, he was employed in San Bernardino County, later in LA County. He served our country well!
Three children from his first marriage, Kathy Hobbs, Carolyn Jacobs, and Steven Adkins survive Doug. A daughter, Dayna Greene, also survives him from his 2nd marriage. He was the grandfather to 9 biological grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren.
Doug was always a devoted LA Dodger fan. He especially enjoyed the 2017 season, watching the games on his big screen TV and rooting them on during the playoff games and the World Series. The Dodgers were Doug's motivation for getting out of bed each morning during his final season. Initiating a conversation about the Dodgers was a sure fire way to perk him up.
His children hope you can join them at his Memorial Service at the Riverside National Cemetery on Tuesday, January 16th at 10:00 a.m. You are also invited to join them for lunch at 11:30 a.m. at The Old Spaghetti Factory at 3191 Mission Inn Ave in Riverside.
