James Patrick Flaherty was born to eternal life on August 23, 2017. On the very same day in 1957, he was joined in the Sacrament of Marriage to his beloved Sachiko in Yakota, Japan. Their covenant of marriage has been a constant witness of love and faithfulness for over 60 years.

James was born on April 28, 1934 in Arlington, Virginia to John J. and Monica C. Flaherty, the youngest of six children. Soon afterward, the family moved to Queens, New York where he became an avid Dodger fan. He graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1952 and enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1954 and served his entire military career as a photogrammetric cartographer rising to the level of superintendent.

James, Sachiko and their three children lived in Springfield, Massachusetts and Saitama, Japan before settling in Riverside in 1971. He rose in stature through the years to achieve the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. Known as a fair-minded leader, teacher, and supervisor who cared a great deal for the men in his care, he remained close to many of them after his retirement from the Air Force after having served his country for 23 years.

James began a second career as a cartographer working for the County of San Bernardino. Following his retirement from this second career, he worked in what he would believe to be heaven on earth - the tool department of Sears, Roebuck & Co.

James and Sachiko loved three children into being during their marriage - John who resides in Long Beach, CA; William who lives in Riverside and Donna who lives in Kansas City, MO.

He joins his parents and siblings, Rita, John, Ruth, Catherine and Monica and his grandson, William Matthew Davenport, who precede him to the paradise promised at his baptism.

James is survived by his beloved wife, Sachiko, and their children and grandchildren - Donna and her son, Mason; William and his daughter, Nicole; John and his wife, Kathy, and their children, Clare, Kennith, James, Colin and Aidan.

We look forward to his smile being among the very first to greet us when our own time in this beautiful and fragile world is complete.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on August 31, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 3774 Jackson St., Riverside, CA.
