Ruth Pendergrass Carter was born on February 20, 1921 to Ulysses and Susie Pendergrass in the family home that she shared along with her five siblings in Springfield, Illinois. Ruth faithfully attended Zion Baptist Church that was founded by her grandfather as a child and young adult while going to area schools.

Ruth Pendergrass Carter was born on February 20, 1921 to Ulysses and Susie Pendergrass in the family home that she shared along with her five siblings in Springfield, Illinois. Ruth faithfully attended Zion Baptist Church that was founded by her grandfather as a child and young adult while going to area schools.

In 1942 Ruth went off to Talladega University and majored in Library Science. The following year on February 19th, 1943 after a yearlong courtship she married her best friend and soul mate Sylvester L. Carter. Sylvester and Ruth would go on to share 53 years of marriage and had four children.

Education was a passion of Ruth, so much that she went back to college and received her Bachelor's Degree in Library Science and then her Masters Degree in Audio Visual Technology as well as pledging Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority from the of Southern Illinois University , Edwardsville. Ruth would use her love for education to teach at St. Teresa Academy, Assumption High School and later Ruth would become the first Librarian and Archivist for the Bellevue News Democrat Newspaper in Bellevue, Illinois.

Ruth and Sylvester moved to California in 1986 where Ruth went to work for California Baptist University applying her education and knowledge to completely overhaul its library before finally retiring to help raise her grandchildren and great-grand children.
Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters: Eunice, Margaret, Katherine and brother H.G. Pendergrass. Less than a week after her death, her youngest brother and surviving sibling James A. Pendergrass died on March 22, 2015. The family takes comfort in knowing that they are all now together as a family resting in peace.

Ruth leaves her four children: Susan Taylor, Ruth Earl, Sylvester Carter II and James Carter. Nine grandchildren: William, Tabitha, Carl, Richard (Tameisha), Alicia, Felicia, James II, George, Sylvester III, Zetta, Anita, Robert, Crystal, Uncle Rudy and Aunt Celeste, James A Pendergrass II, Donzetta Jones, and Ann Brantly along with 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren to mourn her passing.

The family would like to thank: Lauren Crump, Maya Henderson, Michelle Jones, and a very special thank you to Maria De La Cruz. The family would also like to thank everyone for their prayers and continued support during this time.

Ruth will be laid to rest with her husband at the Riverside National Cemetery.
